IT TAKES 3 THINGS TO MAKE POWER: 

Air, Fuel and SPARK.

All 3 must be in correct proportion.  Too much air, you won't get any fuel.  And you must have enough spark or fire to burn the fuel.

The more air and fuel (larger bore, more stroke, bigger valves, bigger carburetor) you get in your engine, the more spark it takes to fire the fuel and make horsepower.
